A very special complete set of "Cassell's Popular Natural History" from 1880 (though this set is undated). The beautiful green cloth boards are blind stamped with beveled edges and gilt detail to the covers and spines. The spines showcase the title and vignettes of a squirrel, kangaroo, and vulture in gilt decoration. Each volume's cover features a different animal in gilt, and they include a turtle, leopard, thrush and monkey.
Beautiful chocolate end papers are at the front and back of each volume. Page edges are gilded on all sides for an even more luxurious look. The set has about 1500 pages, 1550 engravings, and 46 hand colored plates which are very well done. The frontispieces are just wonderful. The books cover everything from mammalia to birds to reptiles in intricate detail.
Each book measures approximately 10 3/8" x 7 5/8". The books are in wonderful condition for being 140 years old. The green cloth boards are still vibrant, and the gilt is bright and shiny. There is very little sunning to the spines. Although netting can be slightly seen at some of the interior hinges, the bindings are holding well.
There is crushing to the spine ends and board corners typical of cloth covered board volumes. Volume I has a small tear in the outer fabric of approximately 1 inch along the seam of the hinge which is only noticeable if you know where to look. There is foxing to some pages, mostly near the front and back of the volumes. The interior pages are clean and bright for the most part, but there may be a mark or small tear I have missed.
